New Dimensions of the Symbolic Power of
Title-holding in Bamunka
Title-holding has
always been an important aspect of social life in Bamunka.
While in the past acquisition of titles was based on
inheritance or personal achievement (in war, hunting,
palace-service, etc.) nowadays all men seem to crave for titles
because of the prestige and respect which it brings to their
holders. In urban and rural areas alike, those who have been
economically successful and want to enhance their social
position still spend a substantial part of their incomes to
'buy' titles. Such behaviour is not unconnected with the notion
that their final place of rest should be their village of
origin. One member of Nggwase expressed the importance of this idea: 'If
someone was given all the honours outside but back home he was
considered no more than a commoner, then he is nothing. And his
death will not be publicised, let alone celebrated with
traditional honours and regalia'.
